"Period music made hip and madly entertaining"
"Remarkably good musicians"
I FURIOSI Baroque Ensemble is one of the world's most innovative Baroque ensembles, comprised of four of Canada's leading early music specialists: soprano Gabrielle McLaughlin, violinists Aisslinn Nosky and Julia Wedman, and cellist/gambist Felix Deak. For a decade and a half, I FURIOSI's Toronto concert series has been revitalising the face of early music in Canada, inspired by the practice of the Baroque era while invoking the "bizarre and unnatural" aesthetic both cherished and despised in its time. Thematic programming allows the performers to present Baroque music in a uniquely relevant way.
I FURIOSI's 18th Season:
Pants on Fire
Saturday, January 7th, 2017
Everyone fibs sometimes. A small falsehood might be told with the best of intentions, or it might not. I FURIOSI will sniff out the truth, but only after committing some fraud of its own. You will leave none the wiser. Tupac Shakur and Princess Diana will both be in attendance.
Guests: Ian Watson, harpsichord
Graham Hargrove, percussion
Fork in the Road
Friday, April 21st, 2017
You have reached a point in your story where you have a choice to make. Slay the dragon? Drink the hemlock? Cross the alps? TOO LATE! You made the wrong choice! I FURIOSI cements its relationship with Debra Nagy and Lucas Harris in a series of terrible decisions. Are you really going to wear that?
Guests: Debra Nagy, oboe
Lucas Harris, lutes and theorbo
All About That Bass
Friday, June 2nd, 2017
What would we do without a large lower section? We would topple over. Our trebles would overcome our basses and we would capsize in our canoes. I FURIOSI has its foundation reinforced by cellist Allen Whear in this celebration of junk in the trunk.
Guests: Allen Whear, violoncello
Sara-Anne Churchill, harpsichord
All concerts take place at Calvin Presbyterian Church – 26 Delisle Ave, Toronto
Tickets: $25 regular; $15 students/seniors/underemployed
